Do you have pain in parts of your body? Do you have trouble perceiving people and relating to them? Do you lack energy?
If you have answered “Yes,” to any of these questions, then please read on.
When I tell people that I am a Certified Rolfer, some ask in confusion, ”You mean a golfer?” while some say “Oh, I know, you do a more intense version of deep tissue massaging.” RolfingŪ structural integration, however, is neither golf nor massage. It is one of the least known kinds of alternative medicine for restoring balance to the body.
RolfingŪ was discovered by Dr. Ida P. Rolf during the last century. She says, “Human bodies do change—your body can, any body can. Bodies—average physical bodies of flesh and blood—are amazingly plastic media, which can change quickly toward a structure that is more orderly and thus more economical in terms of energy.” What this means is that you can undo some, maybe all of the tension that last winter’s fall on the ice created. You might be able to regain all the mobility in your neck that was lost in that car accident years ago. RolfingŪ Structural Integration is a validated system of reorganizing the parts of your body to create balance between them. This helps give you more energy and economy in movement.
Every day I talk with people about little niggling pains in their neck, knees, feet or back. Often they describe an accident that they had years ago that they never quite healed from. Sometimes I listen to people tell me about bigger more taxing problems like impending spinal fusions, scoliosis, and chronic dislocated shoulders. It is truly amazing the amount and type of pain people are willing to live with.
If you have some degree of awareness of your body, then Rolfing will give your body back to you and as a bonus make you more aware of people and events around you. One of my clients was convinced Rolfing was right for her after reading a remark by the noted psychologist Nathaniel Branden, in his book The Art of Living Consciously, where the author says his perception and relationships with people drastically improved after having been Rolfed. Another client similarly remarked that he can communicate with his psychotherapist better now that he is being Rolfed. So even if you are not aware of any physical pain RolfingŪ might just be what you have been looking for to improve YOU.
People can be “Rolfed” in many ways. They can receive one session as rehabilitation for an injury. They can experience 1 to 3 sessions to improve posture. Or they can do the famous “10 series.” I recommend starting with 3 sessions because by then you will know if Rolfing is for you.
You wear a t-shirt and shorts during sessions. In the first session you fill out a health questionnaire and discuss what you expect to achieve with Rolfing. Then we begin table work. What this means is that we get you out of pain. You and me together.
