Healthy Living Not Fitting into Your Schedule
Highmark, Local Hospitals and Community Agencies Offer a Solution
More than 90 million Americans are currently living with chronic and costly diseases that are the direct result of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Most of these life-threatening illnesses, including heart disease, several forms of cancer, and type 2 diabetes, are largely preventable by incorporating a healthy diet and exercise into daily routine.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult for many people to find time to adopt healthier lifestyles. That is why Highmark has partnered with local community agencies and hospitals to provide access to programs that can easily be incorporated into a busy schedule. Highmark’s preventive health strategy focuses on ways to increase access to its lifestyle improvement programs so people learn to not only manage disease, but prevent it in the first place.
Twenty-three community organizations and hospitals are now offering Highmark’s preventive health programs and services. Participants can take part in programs such as “Eat Well for Life,” a four-week nutrition program; “Discover Relaxation Within,” a four-week stress management program; smoking cessation classes and Personal Nutrition Coaching with a registered dietitian. The partnership also has taken steps toward preventing chronic diseases with select facilities offering HOPE, Highmark’s six-week osteoporosis management program and Ornish Advantage, a six-week heart disease prevention program.
By taking these steps, Highmark is able to reach more people throughout the region who are looking for simple, yet effective, ways to improve their lifestyle.
