Forget the Resolutions ... Just Find Your Purpose!
It’s a new year and if you are like the rest of the population, you probably made some pinky-swearing resolutions just like every other year. And like every other year, they will probably go by the wayside by January 7th (I thought I’d be generous).
This year, why not start off on the right foot. If you think that your life has ANY value, you owe it to yourself and to the important people in your life to schedule an hour to be – to be with yourself – alone. It may seem like a colossal waste of time, but it could be the most precious gift you ever give yourself.
Vision is the first step in finding your purpose. While you are alone, picture what life will be like on December 31, 2005. What do you see? Where are you? What is different from now? Do you like what you see? Are you better off? Are you happy?
While alone, think about your life –who is in it, what you do for a living, your passions, and your dreams. Are you even close to getting what you want?
Are the people in your life a priority? Do you have too much stuff? Do you want to simplify? Do you dream big but have little? Listen to your heart – only you can hear what it has to say.
All of these questions (when answered) will begin to define your purpose here on earth. The answers may help you cease running through your days non-stop, never considering why you do the things you do; an eye-opening experiencing.
So while I still strongly believe in goals and resolutions, I think they are tougher to fulfill if you are not aware of your purpose. And all it takes is a little time to sit down and figure it out.
The subtitle of my second book, “The Power of Simplicity” is Choosing to live your life on purpose. If you make conscious choices, you will better serve yourself and the world around you by living up to your purpose.
So for this New Year, do yourself a favor and don’t give up on the resolutions, but find your purpose first. Then your intentions and goals will fall in line naturally.
I wish you the best in 2005 – here’s to a purposeful year!
