Enjoy Your Clutter-Free Journey
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Clear your mind. Now open your eyes and look around. Is your space as clear as your mind? If not, what should you do about that?
If you read my book …But I Might Need It Someday! you can find out HOW to organize your life; but for now, let’s look at the WHY living clutter-free is better for your journey. There are many reasons that I have written about before (April 2004).
Clutter can:
· Make you feel tired
· Affect your body weight
· Keep you living in the past
· Make you put your life on hold
· Induce a feeling of shame and guilt
· Be the main cause of procrastination
· Add unnecessary confusion in your life
· Affect how people treat and/or respect you
· Induce or enhance the chances of depression
· Cause disharmony among family, friends, or coworkers
If you suffer from any of the above symptoms and you feel that clutter is taking over your life, perhaps you just made the connection. Many times, I work with people that are on the brink of overwhelm or are paralyzed by the chaos and clutter in their life.
But life is not that difficult, at least not on the surface. What makes it difficult is the number of choices that we have to make along the way; they complicate the journey. The sheer volume of choices is enough to make anyone dizzy, but then to have the added pressure to make GOOD choices, that’s the clincher. With choices comes the clutter. Not just physical clutter but time, emotional and mental clutter as well.
In life, you have to make choices all day long, pertaining to many different areas. Here is a tiny list of places that you have to decide what is best:
· Shopping
· Technology
· Interruptions
· Life Balance
· Food and Eating
· Kids
· Television
· Sleep
· Financial
· Clothing
· Forgiveness
· Holidays
Choices are an every day occurrence. My second book, The Power of Simplicity has the subtitle: Choosing to live your life on purpose. The more you realize that you HAVE a choice, the better off you’ll be. When you make choices that are aligned with your purpose, life becomes clearer and simpler.
If you always say YES to everything or add a new person or project to your life without considering what is going to suffer as a result, the more cluttered you become. The further you get from your purpose, the harder life becomes.
So what do you say – how about taking a microscope to your choices from this point forward to make sure you are only adding things to your life that propel you to your purpose. Anything else is just clutter.
Here’s to simplifying your life.
