May Is Older American Month

by Jeanette A. Lintelman

Boomers have a lot to look forward too. Soon you too, will be included in this month of honoring. Like the Boy Scout’s motto: Be Prepared.

The media is trying to help you be prepared.

Rule number one

Save your money. A cool million will be a great help.

Rule number two

There is no such thing as too thin. Oh, wait a minute, the new information says you can be healthy and a little chubby.

Rule number three

Stay active run, jump, play ball. Find an activity you can follow the rest of your life. Well, this one isn’t too bad except if you get arthritis in your knees or have a genetic tendency to vascular disease. Think about crochet in that event (this is not the lawn game with the mallets, this is the hand work with a hook and yarn.).

I have developed my own list of rules. After all I’m 67 and this is my month.

  1. Keep involved. At 95, Betty Borland was nearly blind, hard of hearing, and severely crippled with rheumatoid arthritis. She stayed involved in her social setting even becoming the treasurer of her club. And she was proud to tell everyone that she didn’t need a calculator to do the math. She did it in her head the old fashioned way.

  2. Get a life. Find a hobby. Challenge yourself to learn a language, go back to school, play the piano, volunteer. No one likes a whiner.

  3. Turn off the TV. If you know all the shows that are on in the daytime and their time slots – you know too much.

  4. Keep a sense of humor. Look for comedy all around you. There are comedians in line in front of you at the Giant Eagle.

  5. Row, row, row your boat. Your own boat! And remember to be gentle down that stream called life, like the song says. .

  6. If you can save that million bucks – good for you. When my husband’s mother died at 97 years of age, the last words she said to her son were, “I love you Alan.”

  7. That’s worth more than a million dollars. Tell someone you love them today.
