Pittsburgh Families Save Money And Vacation Near Home

published on July 10th, 2011 . by admin

Western Pennsylvania has many great destinations for Pittsburgh families who are looking for affordable vacations close to home. The natural beauty of the Laurel Highlands offers relaxing getaways right outside the hustle and bustle of the city. Fallingwater, the famous home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is only an hour and a half from downtown Pittsburgh. A tour of the breathtaking landmark coupled with a hike along Bear Run and the surrounding wooded area makes for an inexpensive and serene day trip.

For a longer escape, the nearby ski resorts offer year-round attractions with accommodations at very reasonable rates. Summertime activities include miniature golf, rock walls, golfing, swimming and paddleboats. The resorts also hold festivals throughout the summer, from BBQ tastings to gourmet food and wine events. Another option is for vacationers to do as the aristocracy did in the days of old and visit the hills above the city of Johnstown. A museum dedicated to the Johnstown Flood of 1889 tells the tale of how the negligence of the wealthy patrons of the South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club caused the tragedy.

For a true staycation, Point State Park is an excellent destination for family outings. Located in downtown Pittsburgh at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, the Park has a beautiful water fountain and is often the site of free events. The Three Rivers Regatta brings spectators and boaters large and small for good times on and off the water. Music, food and fun activities abound, culminating with a fireworks display to cap off the event. An afternoon or evening at the ballpark is another fun excursion. Tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates game at the picturesque park overlooking the river can be purchased for as little as six dollars for children and twelve dollars for adults.
